Nick Fitzgerald Reels in Pair of National Awards
STARKVILLE, Miss. – National honors pour in for junior Nick Fitzgerald as he was selected the Maxwell Award National Player of the Week and the Davey O’Brien Quarterback of the Week on Tuesday after leading Mississippi State to its largest victory over LSU in the 111-year series history.
Fitzgerald is the first MSU player to claim Maxwell Award Player of the Week honors since Dak Prescott did so following a 48-31 win over No. 6 Texas A&M on Oct. 4, 2014.
The accolades come after Fitzgerald’s four-touchdown performance in State’s 37-7 victory over the No. 11 Tigers, which was also MSU’s largest win over a ranked opponent since the 1942 season.
On Monday, Fitzgerald earned his third Southeastern Conference Offensive Player of the Week laurel of his career, which ties for the second most in MSU history. He was also one of eight quarterbacks named a Manning Award “Star of the Week.” Fans can vote for the Manning Award’s Player of the Week by clicking here. The award winner will be announced on Thursday at 11 a.m.
The native of Richmond Hill, Ga., was 15-of-23 for 180 yards and two touchdowns against LSU. He added 88 yards on the ground, averaging 6.3 yards per carry, with two rushing scores. Fitzgerald accounted for 14 points over the first half against LSU, surpassing the total points allowed by LSU’s defense over the first two games of the season – a combined 10 points.
Closing the game with over 260 yards of total offense and four touchdowns, Fitzgerald overtook Don Smith (1983-86) for second in MSU history for touchdowns responsible with a total of 55. He leads the SEC with 12 total touchdowns this season, which ranks third nationally behind Oklahoma State’s Mason Rudolph (13) and UCLA’s Josh Rosen (14).
No. 17 Mississippi State travels to Athens, Ga., this Saturday to take on No. 11 Georgia at 7 p.m. ET (6 p.m. CT) on ESPN.
