Brandon Holloway Named Doak Walker Award Candidate
STARKVILLE, Miss. – Mississippi State senior running back Brandon Holloway has been named a 2016 Doak Walker Award candidate, the PwC SMU Athletic Forum announced Thursday for the award presented annually to the nation’s top college running back.
A native of Tampa, Florida, Holloway is coming off a junior season in which he became the starting running back midway through the season and started the final eight games of the year. Holloway also accounted for seven touchdowns – five receiving, one rushing and one kick return.
On Wednesday, Holloway was named to the Wuerffel Trophy Watch List and was also named an Allstate AFCA Good Works Team nominee.
He ranked second on the squad in rushing with 413 yards on 92 carries in 2015, including a season and game-high 63 yards on 14 carries in the win at Arkansas.
The PwC SMU Athletic Forum Board of Directors will name ten semifinalists on November 16, and the Doak Walker Award National Selection Committee will cast votes to determine the three finalists, who will be announced on November 22. The committee will cast a second vote beginning November 28 to determine the recipient. The National Selection Committee consists of past recipients, former NFL All-Pro and college All-America running backs, media members and selected special representatives.
The award, which will name its 27th recipient in 2016, is named for SMU’s three-time All-America running back Doak Walker. It is the only major collegiate award that requires all candidates to be in good academic standing and on schedule to graduate within one year of other students of the same classification.
