Cole Smith Named To Rimington Trophy Watch List

Per MSU Media Relations:

STARKVILLE – Mississippi State's Cole Smith has been named to the watch list for the 2023 Rimington Trophy, the organization announced on Friday. The Rimington Trophy is presented annually to the most outstanding center in NCAA Division I College Football.

Smith, a native of Pontotoc, Miss., started all 13 games last season for the Bulldogs and has 28 career starts across 38 career games. Smith anchored an offensive line last season that helped the Bulldogs average 311 yards per game through the air, which was good for the 10th-best passing attack in America last season. Smith helped the rushing attack average 82 yards per game on the ground. Last season, Smith earned a Pro Football Focus pass-block grade of 71.6 while allowing just one sack across 694 pass-blocking snaps. He earned a pass-blocking efficiency score of 98.7.

This year, the Trophy committee worked with Pro Football Focus (PFF) to narrow its list to the top 40 centers. PFF grades every player on every play of every game on how well they execute their given assignment. That play-by-play grading allowed the Trophy committee to create a watchlist based on nominations from the schools and data provided by PFF. Once the season begins, schools will be able to nominate their centers for late addition based on in-season merit.

Mississippi State will kickoff the 2023 campaign on Saturday, Sept. 2, when the Bulldogs host Southeastern Louisiana at 3 p.m. (CT). Season tickets are on sale now and can be purchased by clicking here or visiting hailstate.com/tickets.

Jaden Crumedy Named To Outland Trophy Watch List

From MSU Media Relations

STARKVILLE – Mississippi State's Jaden Crumedy has been named to the watch list for the 2023 Outland Trophy, the Football Writers Association of America announced on Tuesday. The Outland Trophy is given annually to college football's most outstanding interior lineman on offense or defense.

Crumedy, a graduate student from Hattiesburg, Miss., appeared in just five games last season but made his presence felt. Crumedy finished the year with 15 tackles, including five tackles for loss, and two sacks. He has earned 84 career tackles, six sacks, and a forced fumble across 41 career games. Crumedy has been getting praise from various national outlets leading into the season. Most recently, the Executive Director of the Senior Bowl, Jim Nagy, praised Crumedy for his combination of quickness and explosion and sees him as a legit factor at the next level.

Representing the Outland Trophy watch list are 91 returning standout interior linemen representing all 10 Division I FBS conferences and independents. The 2023 season will close with the award's 78th anniversary, and the watch list offers a talented field of players.

Players may be added or removed from the watch list during the season. For the first time, the FWAA will announce an Outland Trophy National Player of the Week each Tuesday this season. If not already on the watch list, each week's honored player will be added at that time.
The recipient of the 2023 Outland Trophy will be announced on The Home Depot College Football Awards show live on ESPN in December. The official presentation to the winner will be made at the Outland Trophy Awards Dinner, sponsored by Werner Enterprises and produced by the Greater Omaha Sports Committee in Omaha, Neb., on Jan. 10, 2024.

The Outland Trophy is the third-oldest major college football award, celebrating 78 years since its founding. Created in 1946, when Dr. John Outland presented the FWAA with a financial contribution to initiate the award, the Outland Trophy has been given to the best interior lineman in college football ever since. Dr. Outland, an All-American at the University of Pennsylvania in the late 1890s, eventually practiced in Kansas City, Mo. An avid outdoorsman, Dr. Outland believed linemen did not get the credit they deserved and wanted an award to recognize them.

Mississippi State will kickoff the 2023 campaign on Saturday, Sept. 2, when the Bulldogs host Southeastern Louisiana at 3 p.m. (CT). Season tickets are on sale now and can be purchased by clicking here or visiting hailstate.com/tickets.

Tulu Griffin Named To Paul Hornung Award Watch List

From MSU Media Relations

STARKVILLE – Mississippi State's Lideatrick Griffin has been named to the watch list for the 2023 Paul Hornung Award presented by Texas Roadhouse, the Louisville Sports Commission announced on Thursday. The Paul Hornung Award recognizes the most versatile player in major college football.

Griffin, named an All-American kick returner by Pro Football Focus last season, has already garnered two preseason All-SEC honors by the media as a return specialist and an all-purpose athlete, along with being named to the Sports Info Solutions (SIS) Preseason All-SEC team and the Preseason All-American team. Last season Griffin racked up 613 kickoff return yards as a junior with one return touchdown. He tied a career-high with 144 return yards and a touchdown in State's overtime victory over Auburn and was named the SEC Co-Special Teams Player of the Week for his efforts. He has earned 1,333 kickoff return yards and two touchdowns in his career. Griffin also lined up at receiver and posted career-highs during the 2023 season in receptions (40), receiving yards (502) and receiving touchdowns (4). Griffin has 76 receptions for 832 yards and five scores in his career.

The watch list for the Paul Hornung Award features approximately 50 players from across college football. During the season, the LSC will announce a weekly honor roll with honorees being sent to the award committee towards the end of the season.

In early December, following conference championship weekend, the Selection Committee members choose their top three players from the finalist pool, ranked in order 1st place, 2nd place, 3rd place. The 5-3-1 point system will be used to determine the winner. Fan voting accounts for the 18th vote (approximately 6 percent of the overall votes) for both finalists and the winner using the 5-3-1 point system.

Mississippi State will kickoff the 2023 campaign on Saturday, Sept. 2, when the Bulldogs host Southeastern Louisiana at 3 p.m. (CT). Season tickets are on sale now and can be purchased by clicking here or visiting hailstate.com/tickets.
