STARKVILLE, Miss. — Although its 2018-19 non-conference schedule isn’t yet finalized, Mississippi State moved one step closer to completion with its agreement to play Clemson as part of the third annual Never Forget Tribute Classic.

The game is set for Dec. 8 at the Prudential Center in Newark, N.J. Tip time and TV will be announced at a later date.

“We are really excited about going to New Jersey to play a great and experienced team like Clemson for such a wonderful cause,” fourth-year MSU Ben Howland said. “They are a veteran team coming off a great season with high expectations for next year, just like us. I know our players are looking forward to this game, and it will be a great test for us early in the season. Brad Brownell has built a great program at Clemson. They are talented and well coached, and I’m looking forward to what will be an exciting matchup.”

This event partners with the Families of Freedom Scholarship Fund, which helps support the children of 9-11 victims. Last season, Florida, Cincinnati, Seton Hall and VCU were the participants, while the inaugural year welcomed Villanova, Pittsburgh, Notre Dame and Penn State.

The Tigers have won all three matchups with the Bulldogs, including their last meeting in November of 2007 at Humphrey Coliseum, 84-82.

Clemson returns four starters from last year’s team that advanced to the Sweet 16 for the first time since 1997. The Tigers posted a 25-10 ledger and finished tied for third in the ACC at 11-7.

After barely missing out on the NCAA Tournament, MSU advanced to the semifinals of the NIT en route to a 25-12 record. The Bulldogs have all five starters back, including All-SEC standout and leading scorer, Quinndary Weatherspoon (14.4).
