MSU Again Performs High With NCAA APR Numbers

STARKVILLE, Miss. — Each of Mississippi State’s 16 varsity sports have excelled in the NCAA’s annual report of Academic Progress Rates (APR), the association announced Wednesday afternoon.

In the multiyear rate based on 2012-15, men’s golf paced Mississippi State with a 994, followed by softball at 992.

In addition, MSU had a record eight teams post a perfect 1,000 for the past academic year — men’s and women’s cross country, men’s golf, men’s and women’s tennis, men’s and women’s basketball and softball.

“Our student-athletes make the classroom a priority, and the APR numbers reflect their hard work,” MSU Director of Athletics Scott Stricklin said. “The focus our coaches, faculty and support staff have to enhance the MSU student experience is a true testament to the desire they have to see our athletes have success in the classroom. It will always be our mission to give our students the tools to be successful in life beyond their playing careers.”

Women’s tennis and women’s basketball made the biggest improvements from the 2013-14 multi-year rate. Women’s tennis jumped 17 points from 974 to 991 (second best in school history), while the women’s basketball team went from 958 to 972, its biggest jump ever.

The Bulldog football team earned a rate of 971, 12 points above the national average. Men’s golf and softball were both 11 points above average.

The APR is derived from data submitted by Mississippi State for the 2011-12, 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2014-15 academic years. Currently, teams must earn a 930 four-year average APR or a 940 average over the most recent two years to participate in NCAA championships. In 2015-16 and beyond, teams must earn a four-year APR of 930 to compete in championships.

The Academic Progress Rate (APR) is a measure of classroom performance related to all participating NCAA Division I athletic programs. It is considered to be the NCAA’s “real-time” snapshot of academic progress, graduation and retention. Schools that fail to reach the NCAA’s minimum score can receive penalties that include loss of scholarships, public admonishment, restrictions on practice and competition and even expulsion from the NCAA.
