COLLEGE STATION, Texas – The stretch run begins for Mississippi State football as the Bulldogs aim for their first conference road victory of the year when they take on 24th-ranked Texas A&M at 6:15 p.m. CT Saturday in Kyle Field.

State (5-2, 2-2 SEC) is currently in fifth place in the SEC West and is seeking to become bowl eligible for a school-record eighth straight year. The Aggies (5-2, 3-1), who are coming of their open week, are in a tie for third place in the West.

“It’s a big challenge for us,” MSU head coach Dan Mullen said. “This will be our third-straight road game where we’re playing a Top 25 team. There’s only one other team in the country that’s faced three Top 25 teams on the road (Maryland). In all phases, they’ve got tremendous athletes.”

The Bulldogs have won two in a row by a significant margin with both offensive and defensive units shining. Todd Grantham’s defensive squad is ranked in the Top 10 nationally in three categories, including total defense (eighth – 281.3), passing defense (second – 153.6) and first down defense (first – 12.3).

Meanwhile, Mullen’s offense will face a Texas A&M defense that leads the SEC in sacks (28) and tackles for losses (56). Bulldog quarterback Nick Fitzgerald has produced back-to-back 100-yard rushing games, and he’s completed 107-of-188 passes for 1,179 yards. He’s accounted for 20 touchdowns this season and is just 106 yards shy of tying Johnny Manziel for fifth in SEC career quarterback rushing yards.

“Defensively, they’re probably the most athletic team we’ve played so far,” Mullen said. “They lead the league in sacks and tackles for losses with great athletes that can run all over the field. With John Chavis as the defensive coordinator, they play a very aggressive style.”
